The Artist's Way in Seattle - Monday OR Wednesday classes - Monday evening and Wednesday daytime class will be online via ZOOM. The Wednesday night Artist's Way Class Section will be in-person - Classes fill quickly! (using Julia Cameron's bestselling book on creativity The Artist's Way)
The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is an international bestseller on the subject of creativity. Whether you see yourself as an artist or not, this book and class can be an incredibly useful resource to tap into your creative side which can benefit many parts of your lives. The 2 hour a week 12 week long class will take students through the 12 chapters with an emphasis on the accompanying chapter exercises and additional creativity exercises and strategies (i.e. meditation tools). This material can work with anyone, no matter how dormant or energized their creative life may be, and can enhance their ability to be more fully and genuinely themselves.
Julia Cameron uses 3 basic tools for students to enhance their lives and their creativity: 1) morning pages (writing 3 pages longhand of stream of consciousness writing), artist's dates (solo fun dates with yourself) and completing creativity exercises at the back of each chapter. Students report that as a result of going through our Artist's Way class they more fully and genuinely know themselves, they discover or re-discover their gifts and talents and have more fun and joy in their lives.
To quote Julia, "In order to retrieve your creativity, you need to find it." The basic tools and the additional creativity exercises that we incorporate into the 12 week course can help you do just that. No prerequisites required for the class. Please note: Students will have the opportunity to have a 30 minute 1 on 1 Zoom chat with Kate prior to the first class and at the end of the quarter, as well. We start with the desire: “I want to write.” Then any number of blocks can pop up to make the task of writing seem like a herculean one to accomplish. Led by Creativity Instructor, Kate Gavigan this 12 week writing class will take you through the chapters in creativity writer Julia Cameron’s book The Right to Write. In this book, Julia explores the “why” of why we write or are called to write. Using that as a foundation, we will take the next small steps from “why” we write to “let’s go ahead and write!”
Over the course of the 12 weeks, we will utilize several transformative Artist’s Way creativity tools (morning pages, artist’s dates) to help ground us in our creativity and in our writing practice. We will have FUN playing around with words and experimenting and exploring a wide variety of writing genres. Students will also engage with some gentle tasks to help identify and miniaturize your critic/censor, address past blocking artistic injuries and write in a low pressure, relaxed and encouraging atmosphere. To quote Julia Cameron, “I want to let everybody in. I want us all to write … we all have the right to write.”
We look forward to offering a class that makes room for us ALL to write!
Absolute beginners welcome as well as long time writers and everyone in between.

Kate Gavigan has been facilitating Artist’s Way Classes since 2009 and has a passion for helping students discover or rediscover their gifts and talents. Kate rediscovered her fondness for writing at about the same time she began offering Artist’s Way Classes. She has loved the power of words since the very first time a book was read to her (“I am a Bunny” by Richard Scarry) and her love for the power, the majesty, the wonder of words has grown exponentially since then. She has a particular calling for helping all students realize they have a unique voice that only they can share and is excited to offer this class that helps them do just that.
